Feed the Children in Managua has been shipping food rice, beans and other food staples to Carlos Bravo and the 10 island schools since 2012. Many students eat their primary meal at school, so this food delivery is extremely important.
They also facilitate the donation of shoes from Toms Shoes - every 6 months. Teachers measure and record each child's shoe size to ensure a proper fit and parents' sign off on the receipt of the shoes.
For the last 14 years, Mona Purdy and her Chicago organization has been tirelessly collecting donations of shoes and boots and shipping to children and families in the poorest regions of the world and has delivered to more than 2 million pairs since 1999. Hearing that children on the islands were particularly susceptible to snake bites during the rainy season she donated 2,000 pair of children's boots.
Toms Shoes was one of the first companies to create and adopt "Buy One, Donate One" on a worldwide scale. They actually do what they advertise.
Every 6 months, Feed the Children in Managua contacts the directors of the schools in Granada to measure students feet and submit a roster for the shoe donation. Delivery is not easy - as 1o of the schools are more than 1 hour boat ride from the mainland.
